Egypt has the most powerful military in Africa, followed by Algeria, Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa according to an index that has just been released by the Global Firepower (GFP) that measures a government’s military …

Out of 30 African countries the GFP has been able to determine that Egypt as the leading country in Africa in military power and 12th out of 126 countries in the world. Egypt has the manpower, equipment which covers the air, land, naval power and the petroleum to sustain its army among other factors. Second in line is Algeria, followed by Ethiopia, Nigeria and South Africa.

The annual GFP index boasts of using an algorithm that attempts to provide a fair canvas that presents an unbiased ranking and realistic outlook on the conventional military firepower and strength of countries. Their system focuses on the diversity of weapons systems and provides bonuses and penalties for things like nuclear arms, diversity of force structures, and alliances (like NATO). The formula is interesting because it makes a smaller but more technologically advanced country competitive with larger militaries from less advanced countries.

The most powerful military in the world is the United States, followed by Russia, China, India and the UK. US has been the world’s strongest military since 1945.

  1. I do not agree with the rankings how can you include somalia, south sudan, central african republic all failed states with on going civil wars!!!Egypt is divided with a civil war going on,Nigeria can not even fight a rag tag rebel group Boko haram and you press it above south Africa which manufactuers its own weapons??Most African countries buy their weapons from South Africa. How did you come to this ranking?????

      1. I totally agree with you. This is a joke. If they like you they put you in the top. Somalia which has no government up to now to be included in the list is ridiculous. It is a bogus list.

    1. Hehehehe… Those states are not failed but if the military burden on them was to be bestowed on your so called successful countries, then I guess you wont have a country leave alone a government.

    2. south sudan , country been run by illiterate myopic ,it can,t compete regionally. i hate maron kiir and his cohorts bunch of illiterate cattle keepers murderers, child molesters.

    3. manufacturing Your own weapons does not mean your country soldier are stronge
If South Africa were to b Nigeria were Boko Haram terrorist are, I bet you even their next generation would’ve migrate to Nigeria.

    4. Making your weapon by yourself does not make your country soldier strong.
If South Africa were to be in Nigeria position that BOKO HARAM are terrorising I bet you even their next generation would’ve migrate to NIGERIA…

    5. They are failed states because of fighting and this conflict make them more stronger and stronger. For instance in South Sudan before ongoing conflict in 2013 there was no fighting jets and gunships or other sophisticated weapons but as I am writing right know they have all the above mentioned things. Oil revenues is being use to equip the army.

    1. True say, even in Nigeria there are a lot of Tanzanian coups that help them to bring peace. And we never heard any civil war in Tanzania, we always helps nearby countries and far in their civil wars, how can you put it under Uganda, Kenya and others like Nigeria, how can you put it under Uganda where in 1979 during Kagera war(Tanzania with Uganda) they won. You provide a lot of details about Africa but it seems you don’t do a research, just ask concerned people.
Do you know where is Africa’s largest lake (lake Victoria)
Do you know the world’s largest and highest Volcanic mountain (mountain Kilimanjaro)
Do you Africa’s highest mountain (mountain kilimanjaro)
Do you know world’s largest and highest free standing mountain (mountain kilimanjaro)
Do you know World’s longest lake (lake tanganyika)
Do you know Serengeti national park, Ngorongoro crater, etc)
      Do you about Tanzanite
Do you know about natural gases great reserves
Do you know Tanzania has great water bodies compared to all African countries
Do you know Tanzania has more than a half percent of all lions and elephants remain in the world
Do you Geneva of Africa (ARUSHA) and why it called so
Do you know about Julius Kambarage Nyerere, one among Africa freedom fighters whose history is tried to be hidden. But the truth is even Nelson Mandela was helped by him (before 1994) a lot of South African they came to Tanzania since they were having problems, even up today there are still South African Graves in Tanzania.
Did you read why Robert Mugabe wrote the book called Asante Nyerere (Thanks Nyerere)

Go deep before publish, I know there are many hidden stories for each country

      1. With all due respect the ranking was based on military fire power. Do nt underestimate Tanzania’s neighbours. You may wish to do some research yourself. It will dawn on you that your under-rating of particularly Kenya and Uganda is baseless.

  2. Wrong list, even in Nigeria there are a lot of Tanzanian coups that help them to bring peace. And we never heard any civil war in Tanzania, we always helps nearby countries and far in their civil wars, how can you put it under Uganda, Kenya and others like Nigeria, how can you put it under Uganda where in 1979 during Kagera war(Tanzania with Uganda) they won. 1. @ Amani Chaga,You don’t know anything about Nigeria soldiers. and who told you that there are lot of Tanzania coups that help to bring peace in Nigeria.you are wrong! Military in Nigeria more than Tanzania population.

  3. African countries need more peaceful enviroment than boosting their ” Military powers”, which in my own view may encourage them to scaljng up hidden conflict and competition, neglecting their development agenda.

    1. do you know Somalia 2st in 1977 and 2nd 1979 most pwrf millatry in Afrca .
do you think Somalia is lower those telling … really you looke like sheep.. teach history yuor self…

  4. If its true, egypt should help our poorly ranked Army fight Alshabab. Kenyans are suffering , terrorist are finishing our peaceful people.

  5. Ranking depends on the budget allocated to Defence every fiscal year, the number of military personells (tanks and platoons), the type of military hardware you have etc….for instance the USA budget is equal to number top ten countries combined…..Kenya should be in top 5, depending on the above parameters

  6. I think Ethiopia should be the first, cos its military is somalia, south sudan(as Igad), North sudan in darfur, ruwanda and burundi.
please see the war confidence of Egypt and algeria is almost zero. especially algeria has no WAR confidence.
    Egypt is already dead.

  7. these people who made this ranking are not serious.where is Rwanda in this list?Rwanda must come in top 10.Rwanda which overtake whole Congo in a few days from Ngoma to Kinshasa

  8. All i see is fight! Africans please wake up. We need a strong army that is called African united army. No one is better than another..this wabsite is crated to make you fight my people please be patient. ..#Eritrea

  9. Truly speaking, this thing is just among those many scarms! Try to make analysis of weapons based on stockpiles of weapons! Well it might have a point on one hand, but it is short sighted. You see go through history of armies of what they did fight and how they did fight, how many wars and victories! How do they win like they win. I would cut story short by saying this … If your analysis is for the sake of video games I am Ok with it, but if it is for military prowess you better stop those scarm analysis. They are just obsolete.
You wouldn’t have a great history of Sparta and athens against Persia with that kind of a scarm.

  10. May be they ranked those with petroleum, and uranium …how comes that democratic republic of congo is named number 10 when even Rwanda is left unmentioned among 30 countries? Look at uganda……this is unfair ranking .

    1. I’m disagreed with this ranking!! that list was for ancient world Please try to updates the new one because we are in modern world, so on my behalf i can put South Africa to leading African military nations the facts that shows South Africa has the most powerful army in Africa; it has more harmful weapons than any other country in Africa; it is the only African country that was trying to create the Nuclear weapon but was stopped by the US. The South African National Defense Force (SANDF) this includes: South African Army, South African Navy, South African Air Force and South African Military Health Service. South Africa has recently lower their budge on army from $7.21 billion 2003 to nearly $4 billion 2011. Trained by Israeli, and British, South African solders are more armed and more trained than any other country’s soldiers. how can you posts something like this without any research And Put Rwanda to the secondly position…………

  11. this is not really. Somalia must not there cos Smlia is wide and more regions. only one regional state can to be Top10… like Puntland….

  12. All friends thanks for giving me lots of information that I never knew. I just wanted to tell you that the country that having a military stayed for more than 30 years without going to front line cannot be added to that list. All of you should make research about that. By the name, Ayii

  13. Why is it that my country was not mentioned, Liberia has one of the best infantry military in west Africa and more besides, we fought war for 15 years, and acquired training from from the world best military, like the US,UK,Sweden, Nigeria …..
    Why???

  14. uganda shld be ranked 1st, now those ranked best positions they’re not helpng other poor contries with civil wars. but uganda everywhere and trusted army. somalia, CAR, sudan, congo, Dgbouti all helpng fellow Africans. but never heard of Egypt army anywhere around african countries??? so why not rank UPDF the best in Africa

  15. The GFP should revise it’s sources and give us the list of countries and excluded Somalia, DRC, and unwanted countries to be out in the ranking.

  16. Those south Africans and Tanzanians claiming they are stronger than Nigeria should shut up because if they had the challenges Nigeria has they would have been crushed and disorganised.boko haram have been crushed and not operating as before. The Nigerian army has A very large personnel and has the Monet to fight any war.

  17. You would first define your subject, powerful military in which sense, Equipments?, war know know skills?. if you article is based on equipments that is fine but on my side i see powerful military in terms of victory no matter what equipments you have. some have very monster military equipments but challenged by a single simple AK 47.

  18. I totally disagree with this fails update. …number 1 suppose be Ethiopia. …most powerful n storic country in Africa

  19. There are some countries that have never shot a single bullet since gaining independence and they are atop of uganda…….i shiver.

Uganda brought peace in Somalia where most african countries feared to go including the united states of America!

Please, revise ur formula of ranking african countries militarily.

  20. This ranking is for past period! I think this south africa may come first and the country rwanda around place 8 .
