African leaders on Tuesday adopted a strategy calling for a collective withdrawal from the International Criminal Court.

The non-binding decision came behind closed doors near the end of an African Union summit.

It was the latest expression of impatience by African leaders with the court, which some say has focused too narrowly on Africa while pursuing cases of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity

Desire Assogbavi, head of Oxfam International’s liaison office to the AU, confirmed the adoption of the strategy. A source close to the continental body’s legal council also confirmed it, saying countries had been divided on whether to call for leaving the court individually or together, abcNews reports

Elise Keppler with Human Rights Watch’s international justice program said the strategy has no timeline and “few concrete recommendations for action.”

  1. Africa will come back to a monasticism. Who will deliver big issues like we saw ECOWAS over Gambia? Museven, Mugabe, Kabila and today is Lungu. What has AU done the crimes committed by these guys?

  2. WHAT ARE THEY SCARED OF? THE FACT THAT WE LIVE IN THE GLOBAL WORLD WE SHOULD BELONG TO A COMMON COURT THAT TREATS EVERY ONE EQUALLY WITHOUT ANY DISCRIMINATION. AFRICA NEEDS THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT.

  3. AFRICANS SHOULDNOT WITHDRAL FROM ICC BECAUSE OUR ELECTROL CODE IS TRAMPLED BY THOSE IN POWER MAKING OUR JUDICIARY AS JUST A RUBBER STAMP. SHOULD THIS HAPPEN THERE WILL BE COUNTLESS DICTATORS AND COUP DE TOURS WILL BE THE ORDER OF THE DAY. SOULDERS WILL DEFINATELY HAVE AN APETITE TO RULE IN EACH AND EVERYCOUNTRY. IN VIEW OF FORESAID IT WILL BE SUICIDE TO PULL OUT FROM ICC.

  4. before pulling out of ICC African leaders should develop a stratage on how to handle criminal case concerning the violation of human rights and situations like CONGO DRC. Kabila need to step down and pave way for elections, all this is happening in the sight of our leaders and there doing nothing but opt to withdraw from ICC
