Benin to stop paying utility bills for former presidents

0

The presidency in Benin says it will not pay the utility bills of former heads of state any more, reports the BBC.

It said the former presidents living in Benin should pay their own bills using other allowances they receive.

Some people in the commercial capital, Cotonou, criticized the move saying that it was undignified for former presidents to have to pay their own water, phone and electricity bills.

In many other African countries it’s common that ex-heads of state receive perks including housing, cars and generous pensions.
