Ethiopians held a colorful event to mark the country’s victory on March 2nd, 1896 against European colonial powers (Italy) that made them become the only African country to defeat a colonial power and avoid colonization.

‘‘Our ancestors have made huge sacrifices to safeguard the sovereignty of the country and pass it on to existing generations,’ said Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome during an event in the capital, Addis Ababa

Ethiopia became the first country in Africa to defeat colonialists under the leadership of Emperor Menelik II in a battle that took place at the state of Adwa in northern parts of the country.

“It is my strong conviction that a generation that remembers the history of its forefathers can also make its own history. In order to pass this history on to the next generation we have to build a war museum and a pan African University… Although a foundation stone for this project has already been laid, it has never materialized due to various reasons.

Now, the Ministry of Tourism is taking on full responsibility and is establishing a secretariat office so that this can be realized soon and make Adwa a tourist destination,” said the President

Ethiopian security forces matched colorfully and displays by veteran soldiers showed up with weapons and displayed artistry.

“The Adwa victory is a symbol of courage for all Africans and black people around the world,” government spokesman Negeri Lencho told The Associated Press.
