Ilhan Omar, a former refugee, was elected to the Minnesota Legislature on the November 8th elections,  as a self-styled  progressive who would stick up for the rights of fellow Muslims and work for fairer pay and better schools in Minneapolis. She migrated to the United States after spending part of her childhood in a Kenyan refugee camp.

Her victory was notable in a campaign season that was marked with so much tension following Donald Trumps’ campaign strategy that rallied against immigrants and people of color.

Nearly a third of Somali refugees who resettled in the United States live in Minnesota and according to the latest data of 2010, they are estimated to be around 25,000.
