One of Burundi’sÂ former presidents, Colonel Jean-Baptiste Bagaza, has died at the age of 69 inÂ hospital in the Belgian capital, Brussels.
He came to power in a coup inÂ 1976 and ruled until he was deposed inÂ 1987.
Much of the country’sÂ infrastructure and industry was built up during this time and it was one ofÂ the most stable periodsÂ inÂ the country’s post-independence history.
Current President Pierre Nkurunziza tweeted his “condolences to his family and all Burundians” in French:
