Gambian government calls AU resolution to stop recognizing Yahya Jammeh as Gambian President ‘irresponsible and malicious’
The Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh has called the resolution by the African Union Peace and Security Council to no longer recognize the government of Yahya Jammeh from the 19th January 2017 irresponsible and malicious.
“This resolution is irresponsible and malicious and only meant to annoy and aggravate the political situation in The Gambia and we condemn it in the strongest possible terms.” Reads the statement by the Presidency of Gambia published by the country’s Daily Observer
According to the Gambia’s Presidency the AU Peace and Security Council does not have the mandate to bar member states and governments from The African Union.
Since resolution has to be approved by the authority of the heads of State of the African Union it is therefore non-binding and of no effect, stated the Statement further.
