A church roof has collapsed in southeastern Nigeria causing “many deaths and injury” the country’s president said on Saturday, with state media reporting that up to 200 people could have been killed, News24 reports
The church building collapsed on Saturday during the ordination of the head of the church, Akan Weeks, as a Bishop.
According to local media reports, the evangelical Reigners Bible Ministry was packed with worshipers when the roof collapsed. The roof was still under construction.
In a statement by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu, President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his condolences, telling “the Governor and the People of Akwa Ibom State, the deep sorrow of his family, the government and the entire people of Nigeria over the many deaths and injury recorded following the incident.”
A rescue worker said that bodies of at least 60 victims have been retrieved from the scene but further said that the number could rise as debris is removed
