A 14-year-old Kenyan student of the Moi Girls High School was yesterday arraigned in court in Nairobi for allegedly setting fire in a school dormitory that resulted in the death of nine of her classmates, the Daily Nation reports.
After preliminary investigations, local prosecutor told the juvenile Court that the girl could be liable for three charges including murder, arson or assault.
Accompanied by a security official and her mother, the young girl was covered up when she arrived at the Milimani juvenile court to keep her identity discrete because she is a minor.
The girl will be detained for 10 days as police complete investigations.
Fire broke out at the school last Saturday, engulfing a dormitory and killed seven girls. Two other girls later died of their injuries. 10 others were admitted at a hospital with several degrees of burns.
Senior assistant director of public prosecutions Alloys Kemo told the court that the student was arrested after preliminary investigations showed she could be liable for murder, arson, or assault.
