Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta has announced the release of 7000 inmates serving jail terms on petty offences, freeing space in the country’s prisons.

Addressing the nation at this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations in Machakos Country, Uhuru urged Chief Justice David Maraga to speed up cases on corruption to enable culprits fill the new spaces.

Mr. Uhuru also noted the impact of drought to many Kenyans and said that in the coming weeks the country’s government will work with various country governments to provide a solution to famine.
