Photo: The Checkers supermarket chain partnered with Stellenbosch University’s Wilgenhof Mens’ Residence to break the Guinness World Records world record for the world’s largest lunchbox. The lunchbox measuring 8,47m3 (2,55m x 2,66m x 1,25m) shattered the previous world record of 4,74m3.

Stellenbosch, South Africa — Stellenbosch University (SU) student residence Wilgenhof (“Willow court”) built a giant lunchbox, which was displayed on SU’s campus square or ‘Rooiplein’, under the leadership of Altus Viljoen, a member of Wilgenhof’s house committee; the lunchbox measures 8.47 m³ (299.11 ft³), setting the new world record for the Largest lunchbox, according to the World Record Academy.

The Guinness World Records’ record for the largest lunch box measures 8.47 m³ (299.11 ft³) and was achieved by Altus Viljoen and Wilgenhof (both South Africa) as measured in Stellenbosch, South Africa, on 12 April 2015.

Guinness World Records also recognized the world record for the largest box of popcorn; it was achieved by Cineplexx (International) with a volume of 52.59m³ (1857 ft³), which was filled in 1 hour and 57 minutes at an event outside Avenue Mall in Osijek, Croatia, on 16 April 2011.

The World’s Largest Lunchbox was filled with over R100 000 worth of food, toiletries, stationary and toys that were donated by Checkers, a leading South African supermarket.

These products were given to the Andrew Murray Child and Youth Care Centre in Wellington, Western Cape. Ten of the total of 150 children represented the Centre at the official ceremony.

The products were packed neatly inside the lunchbox in separate crates. Each of the 150 children received a unique crate according to their age-specified needs.
