Mauritania celebrates its independence day, the 56th anniversary of self-rule, which was attained from French occupation.
France controlled Mauritania as its overseas territory. While the struggle for independence in Mauritania was not a fully fledged armed struggle, Mauritania did experience the wave of nationalism, which swept the continent in the 1950s and 1960s.
The nationalists in Mauritania pushed for the independence, which was attained in 1960, with Nouakchott as the country’s capital.
