President Mugabe tells UN General Assembly: 'We are not gays!'

29

Robert Mugabe used the United Nations podium on Monday evening to attack homosexuality in front of the General Assembly.

Deviating from his prepared remarks, the 91-year-old leader of Zimbabwereportedly barked: “We are not gays!”

Homosexuality in Zimbabwe

In 2006 the government made it illegal for two people of the same sex to kiss, hug – or hold hands

Mr Mugabe made the comment as he criticised Western nations’ “double standards” and attempts to “prescribe ‘new rights’ that are contrary to our values, norms, traditions and beliefs.”

Zimbabwe has one of the worst LGBT rights records on the African continent, with the country’s leader frequently demonising homosexuality.  In 2013 he described homosexuals as “worse than pigs, goats and birds.”

In the same speech Zimbabwe’s leader – who has been in power since 1987 – claimed the UN Human Rights charter did not give states “the right to some to sit in judgement over others”.

“In that regard, we reject the politicisation of this important issue and the application of double standards to victimize those who dare think and act independently of the self-anointed prefects of our time.”

“We equally reject attempts to prescribe “new rights” that are contrary to our values, norms, traditions, and beliefs. We are not gays! Cooperation and respect for each other will advance the cause of human rights worldwide. Confrontation, vilification, and double-standards will not.”

Mr Mugabe’s remarks follow decades of state-sanction persecution against homosexuality, with male same-sex sexual activity remaining illegal within Zimbabwe.

A Pew survey in 2013 found the African continent – with the notable exception of South Africans – overwhelmingly intolerant of gay men and women.

  1. Mugabe a man, African Hero!! We respect you, admire you and proud of you. What does it mean gays? Are they really normal people? God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Adam or Eve and Eve. Please, read Bible Genesis 2:4-3:24 Adam and Eve. What do a man do with a fellow man or a women with a women?

  2. Mugabe is right .He is a fearless leader despite his actions during elections in Zimbabwe. He’s always point blank to the western decisions towards Africa.I give him credit for his boldness.

  3. Mugabe, you are truly an African who stands for the African values. Your stands against the Western negative culture and political control have awarded you a place in the African History. Keep on Mr. Africa.

  4. if you had your dates correct, it would make the article more credible, he has not been in power since 1987, PLEASE AVOID posting unverified facts on the WORLD WIDE WEB, it makes it hard to believe anything you write, i actually first read this on Newsday, when I saw 1987, i realised the site is not credible, wasnt expecting the same mistake here too 🙂

  5. Well said Mr. Mugabe, you such a guarding father of the African Continent and that as a youth of this great continent, I do agree with your opposition to this evil and inhuman act of self-destruction. In fact, tradition in Africa is much more valuable than tradition in Europe and the Americas’ where they have been suppressed. Long live Africa guiding father, long live Mr. Robert Mugabe for his selfie opposition to inhuman colonial practices.

Dear all – Mr Mugabe might need to study African history a bit more thoroughly. Homosexuality has been part of African traditions for a very long time – it is simply one aspect of human diversity. Learn more and think harder.
