President Zuma orders FM Pravin Gordhan to abort foreign trip and return immediately
South African President Jacob Zuma has ordered finance minister Pravin Gordhan to return to South Africa from an investor roadshow to Britain and the United States because he “did not give permission for the trip.”
The minister who is in London accompanied by his deputy Mcebisi Jonas has been asked to cancel the remainder of the trip and return to South Africa immediately.
Reports suggest that the minister will be on an overnight flight back to his country.
Reuters reports a source to say the communication was relayed to the minister yesterday.
“They were told last night or this morning to come back,” Reuters reports the source, who had no more details, to say.
Local media outlets are already reporting that the order from President Zuma may mean a cabinet reshuffle is on the cards.
