Nurudeen Mohammed will become a doctor in three months’ time. Is a dream’s tape he cannot wait to breast after a rollercoaster journey in life.
He struggled to raise money to foot his bills. His mother sells one of the commonest foods along the streets of Accra – Waakye. His father does two menial jobs to keep the family of six going in this dire era.
Mohammed’s dad works at Ghana’s biggest health facility – the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital – as an orderly; a job reserved for the unskilled. Basically, he does cleaning, helps patients by carrying them around among others.
“He doubles as a security man as well in the night,” Mohammed revealed on the Morning Starr with Kafui Dey. “He goes to work in the morning and comes back in the evening and at night he has to go for another assignment.”
“I started class one again and I had to drop out in the third term because there was no money so I had to sit at home,” Mohammed recalled.
To support his family, young Mohammed became an apprentice for “well over six months” at a vulcanizing shop to raise money.
“I resumed school from class two and since then it has been in and out of school due to financial crisis,” Mohammed opined.
After a rough journey to complete his primary and junior high school, he ended up at one of Ghana’s respected senior high schools – Accra Academy.
“I took my testimonials, results and certificates to the MTN Foundation… and they gave me the opportunity even when the deadline had passed and I passed the examination and got the scholarship.”
Mohammed, whose dream job was to become a footballer or journalist, ended up at the Ghana Medical School.
Thanks to the MTN Foundation and friends, he has been able to pay his bills to complete medical school.
Asked how his father feels about him, Mohammed stated: “It is written all over him. He is happy to introduce me to everyone as his son. For me that is the highest achievement.”
“Do your best and that’s all you can offer. When you do your best the help will come naturally. Just keep on doing your best,” Mohammed advised people who feel like giving up when all is lost.
