President-Museveni-710x434The president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, says it is a waste of the country’s resources to be sponsoring athletes to the Olympics without them returning home with any medals.

“We have pulled of from everything Olympics related.” – he said in a press release.

“Every country goes to the Olympics to market itself. Uganda goes and no one hears of us. We are just wasting monies. We have so much other things to spend our monies on. This is the last Olympics we have participated” – Museveni said.

The president’s decision to withdraw from all future Olympics is as result of the country’s athletes failing to win even a single medal for the country.

“Even bring home one medal. Just one. What did you go to do ? We can’t continue wasting money like that you know” – he added.

  1. Much as it is good to win medals, participation in the Olympics has other values. Realistically, money wasting should be avoided by sponsoring athletes in sports where the chances of winning medals are high. Wholesale cancellation in future participation should be discouraged.
