66 giraffes flown from Africa to China, to give their citizens opportunity to see the animals in their country
66 giraffes have been flown from Africa to China in a move that will give more Chinese nationals an opportunity to see the animals in their country.
The giraffes arrived in central China’s Henan Province in the early hours of Sunday, on a chartered flight from Johannesburg, South Africa.
The flight carries 22 males and 44 females, all reported to be around two years old. According to Xinhua news agency, the animals will go through a health check and be quarantined for 45 days in the city of Jiaozuo.
After the quarantine period, they will then be sent to zoos across China to meet visitors. Xinhua also reports the Henan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau to say that Zhengzhou has received close to 10,000 imported animals since 2015, including giraffes and zebras from South Africa, polar bears from Russia, alpacas from Chile and dolphins from Japan.
